Post Haste – An Art Project April 30, 2012

When was the last time you got a handwritten letter in the mail? In response to the proposed closure of 3,700 post offices and the layoffs to follow, eight Bay Area artists were invited to use the U.S. Postal Service as an analogy for decaying public institutions and our relationship to civil engagement in a digital age. The exhibition, Post Haste, will include new media, mixed media, sculpture and participatory works. It will be open to the public at the MacArthur B Arthur Gallery in Oakland, CA, from May 4 to 28 and is curated by Jayna Swartzman.

Post Haste

The U.S. Postal Service has struggled to remain relevant since the advent of digital media. Today, lightning-fast communication has replaced old-fashioned civilities, like physical correspondence and direct human interaction, because they often seem cumbersome and archaic in comparison. Post Haste examines these orphaned systems, like the Post Office, that once relied on actual, genuine human beings who are now being replaced by automated, whizz-bang electronic processes.

The artists in Post Haste will explore the USPS as a public service, through both traditional and contemporary methods, looking at civic centerpieces and government mechanisms that are no longer — at least physically — as present as they once were in ordinary life.

Our “2 Cents” on Rising Stamp Prices July 24, 2009

TwoCentsSo the price of US stamps has gone up again, this increase is 2 cents per stamp.  Here’s an article reporting the 2 cent increase.  And Here’s the History of US Stamp prices.  This means that instead of paying 42 cents for a stamp, we’re now paying 44 cents to mail a letter to your loved ones, friends, family or business colleagues. You’ll also recall stamp prices going up 1 cent in May of last year as well (see our blog on that previous 1 cent increase).

It’s not too hard to get someone to give you their 2 cents on things. Here are a number of sites where people freely offer up their 2 cents on a variety of topics ranging from life, politics, media, information, marketing, food, dolls, books, race cars, public relations, and just about anything else.

My 2 Cents – musings on marketing, media, public relations….and life.

2 Cents Worth – Teaching & learning in the new information landscape.

2 Cents for Change – Give your 2 cents, get back change.

My 2 Cents – Flex programming made easy.

If you are interested in our 2 cents, here you go.  iwiLetter.com has NOT increased the cost of sending a letter so this means you save 2 cents every time you send a letter using iwiLetter!  Why not save those pennies and send your next letter via iwiLetter.com.  After all, a penny saved, can be a penny earned!

And that’s our 2 cents on this!

Remember When? March 25, 2008

Mailbox

Remember years ago when it used to be exciting when you got an email?  You sat down at your computer and it told you, “you’ve got mail”, and you said, “oh man look, someone sent me an email!”  You couldn’t wait to open, read and respond to it.  It was exciting, it was fun, it was new.  However, time has passed, and the number of emails you now get every day has grown unmanageable.  What used to be cool and fun to get, now becomes, “oh no!  ANOTHER email I need to deal with”.  And this is AFTER you have all your spam and junk mail siphoned off.

Later in the day, you head out to your mailbox to see if your new Netflix has arrived.  Yo get your mail and start going through it, “bill, bill, Netflix, credit card offer, credit card offer, Chinese menu, bill, bill, LETTER – to: ME, from: SOMEONE I KNOW!”  That’s the first thing you open up!  It’s then that you remember that you LOVE getting a letter from someone, and you realize that it’s as simple as sending a letter to give someone else that same feeling of being loved, remembered, cared for, thought about, in love with, felt worthy of, important enough, etc. to send them a letter.

To say something in a letter; it just communicates more love to a family member or lover, shows more thought to someone that’s been on your mind lately, creates more worth and value to an important customer, thanks someone more deeply, or commands more importance to a business colleague.  And yes, a Letter will make you seem smarter than you really are!

OK, so you want to send someone a letter and give them that same joy you just experienced.  Do you have a stamp lying around?  What about an envelope?  You know stamp prices keep going up, right?  Are the stamps you have still the right price?  Are you going to hand write this letter?  Can YOU read your own handwriting?  Will someone else be able to?  OK, so let’s type and print a letter…..oh wait, your printer doesn’t have anymore ink does it?

Well, you’re already sitting at your computer.  Go ahead and visit iwiLetter.com, where you can “send real letters, write online”.  That’s right, just visit iwiLetter.com and type your letter, we’ll handle the rest.  We’ll print, stuff, stamp and mail your letter anywhere in the US!  We even have a growing collection of sample letters (Love Letters, Thank You Letters, Business Letters, Happy Birthday Letters, etc) to help you get started writing!

A Penny Saved, Can Be a Fortune Earned! February 27, 2008

Stamps

So it sounds like the price of US stamps will be going up 1 cent in May.  Here’s an article reporting the increase.  This means that instead of paying 41 cents for a stamp, you’ll be paying 42 cents to mail a letter to your loved ones or business colleagues.  iwiLetter.com will NOT be increasing the cost of sending a letter so this means you’ll be saving 1 cent everytime you send a letter using iwiLetter!

Think of the things that you can buy for 1 penny.  Here’s a list of things from Sav-On-Closeouts.com

2″ Garfield stickers
2″ Woody woodpecker Tattoos
Foam Smiley Face Rings
Plastic Graduation Toothpics
Neon Pencil-tip Erasers
Plastic Bat Rings, Decorative Fall Leaves
Glow in the Dark Spider Rings.

The list is endless.

Heck, here’s an article from the New York Times that ponders “What Happens if a Penny is worth more than 1 cent?” due to the increased cost of metals.

Snopes seems to confirm that a penny costs more than 1 cent to manufacture.

You can even build wealth, 1 penny at a time.  Check out PennySleuth.com for lots of great info and ideas.

And for all you serious coin collectors out there, a history of the US Penny can be found on Wikipedia

As you can see, you can get a LOT for 1 penny, you can probably even haggle with someone to give you 1.4 cents for a penny based on it’s perceived value due to the cost of producing it.  If you can get so much for a penny, when the cost of stamps goes up 1 cent why not save those pennies and send your next letter via iwiLetter.com since we won’t be increasing our price for sending real letters online.  After all, a penny saved, can be a Fortune earned!
