Letters of Note March 30, 2010

Letters of Note (LettersofNote.com) is a cool blog that gathers and sorts fascinating letters, postcards, telegrams, faxes, and memos. It’s updated every weekday.

Here are some of the better ones:

In this one, Saul was just 14 when he wrote and illustrated the following letter to Michelle Young; an ex-girlfriend who had just recently ended their relationship and, in a previous letter, blamed the decision on Saul’s unending talk of his guitar. The guitar obsession never ended and Saul soon became Slash, one of the world’s most admired guitarists and member of Guns N’ Roses. Check out the letter HERE

In 1998, aged just 14, aspiring young cartoonist Amir Avni decided to get in touch with the creator of Ren & Stimpy, John Kricfalusi. Being a hardcore fan of Kricfalusi’s work, Amir sent him an introductory letter along with a few cartoons he’d drawn, some of which contained relatively unknown characters of John’s. To call Kricfalusi’s response ‘generous’ would be an understatement. Read it HERE!

In the summer of 1899, whilst alone in his Colorado Springs laboratory working with his magnifying transmitter, the inimitable Nikola Tesla observed a series of unusual rhythmic signals which he described as ‘counting codes’. Having just detected cosmic radio signals for the first time, Tesla immediately believed them to be attempted communications from an intelligent life-form on either Venus or Mars, and later said of the experience, ‘The feeling is constantly growing on me that I had been the first to hear the greeting of one planet to another’. The next year, Tesla was asked by the Red Cross to predict man’s greatest possible achievement over the next century. The letter HERE was his reply.

If you’re a future rock god ready to write your soon to be ex-girlfriend a letter, a budding cartoonist, or just some dude that harnessed electricity, send someone a letter now, Send Someone an iwiLetter!

Send Real “Snail” Mail From Your Computer January 29, 2009

iwiLetter.com encourages you to send “snail mail” to your friends, family, and business colleagues.  Really, it’s real physical snail mail, mail sent by actual snails!  Boredom Research has created “RealSnailMail” http://www.boredomresearch.net/rsm/index.html, a service (ok, maybe “experiment” is a more accurate word than “service”) where little snails are equipped with a tiny electronic cicruit and antenna that receives messages.  Users type a message right from their computer, that message is transmitted to one of several different snails, and then the waiting begins.  Then the waiting continues, and continues.  The waiting lasts until the snail finds it’s way across it’s living space to a “drop off” dispatch center receiver where the message is then electronically retrieved and sent along it’s way to the recipients email inbox.

What a novel concept, snail mail moving at a snail’s pace!  You see, iwiLetter.com is not the only one out there using technology to make snail mail a reality for all of us in this increasingly fast paced and technical world.

Is Anything Free in this World Anymore? May 10, 2008

Free Sign

Sometimes you get the feeling that there just isn’t anything free in this world anymore, right?  It seems that every day we are dealing with hidden fees and charges, rising gas pricing, falling stock prices, scams, the weakening U.S Dollar, more work, less pay, tighter budgets, shrinking profits, “increased costs of doing business”, housing crunch, etc.  The list goes on and on.  It’s hard enough to keep our head above water, much less even think about saving money or taking a vacation, and you can certainly forget about any chance of getting something for free, right?  Is anything FREE in this world anymore?

Of course there is!  iwiLetter.com (send real letters, write online) is offering a free month of service during the entire month of May.  It’s our Memorial Day Mail Call Just visit iwiLetter.com/Military and type your letter.  We’ll print it on reclyced paper, stuff it, stamp it with a first-class stamp, and mail it anywhere in the U.S. (including U.S. Soldiers currently overseas) within 24 hours, for FREE!  It’s our way of saluting the U.S. Military and their families this Memorial Day, it’s our Memorial Day Mail Call!

Memorial Day Mail Call

There are even sites online that profile tons of free stuff each and every day!  Check them out:

http://www.TopSavings.com (formerly called TotallyFreeStuff.com)

http://www.TheFreeSite.com

http://www.free-stuff.com

So clearly, there are things that are still free.  Take advantage of them!

However, this all comes at a very sad and strange time when something critically needed is being offered for free, but is not being accepted.  The U.S. and U.N. are eagerly trying to freely give aid and resources to the people of Myanmmar who desperately need the help after suffering from a catostrophic cyclone.  Their government however does not currently appear to be accepting or allowing this aid and help to reach the people in desperate need.  Of course they must have their reasons, it’s just frustrating to think something is free and readily available, yet the “should be” accepting party is not interested.
